Specialties

Dr. Michael S. Merkley knows how to make patients from all over feel right at home at Midwest Orthopaedic Center. Before settling in Peoria, he gained his comprehensive health care experience at institutions throughout the country. After graduating from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, he went on to complete his residency in Grand Rapids, followed by a fellowship at the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation in Columbus, GA.

At Midwest Orthopaedic Center, he provides knee and shoulder care to patients of all ages. In our surgery facility, Midwest Orthopaedic Hospital at UnityPoint Health – Proctor, Dr. Merkley performs arthroscopic shoulder repair and reconstruction to address rotator cuff tears, dislocations and separations, labral and SLAP tears, biceps tendon injuries and frozen shoulders. When treating patients in need of shoulder replacements, he performs anatomical total shoulder arthroplasties and reverse total shoulder arthroplasties among other procedures. With knee arthroscopy and reconstruction surgeries, Dr. Merkley addresses ACL injuries, meniscus tears, patellar dislocations and cartilage injuries. As a team physician for Illinois Central College, Dr. Merkley uses his in-depth surgical expertise and sports medicine experience to keep athletes off the bench.

Don’t let an unexpected injury define your athletic career or keep you from doing your normal activities. At your home for orthopedics, Dr. Merkley can help you reactivate your life.
